Communication & Boundaries

The early months can be baffling, as new parents learn to interpret their baby's different cries, sounds and gestures. Then when parents gain in confidence, children change, leaving some parents guessing about whether their child is being "naughty" or is just too young to understand. Each tantrum can be a lesson for both parent and child, and effective boundaries can take time to develop. For NHS advice on managing tantrums, see our resource page.

They probably are going to get a cold and a sniffle and things like that but I think one of things that I may find difficult, mainly because of what I do for a living, people, I like to think that I'm quite easily approachable and people can communicate, and I think I'm gonna struggle the fact that they will not be able to communicate what might be wrong if they've got earache or a cold. And it's just, just being there for them and just trying to understand it and comfort them, as best I can. And really, a learning curve for both of us, because they'll not be experienced before and I'll not have experienced it and I'm sure at times my wife will step in and say, "Would you like me to take over?" and then vice versa.

There are definitely times where I think he understands that we don't want him to do something, but he just carries on, I hope he doesn't turn out to be naughty! But there's no way of knowing.
