Extended Family

As well as offering vital support, the extended family also provide roots. Everyday family moments evoke memories that strengthen ties between generations. If you're a grandparent looking for advice, see our resource page for a link to the Age UK website.

Not becoming HIM

My relationship with my father is interesting, or has been interesting, it's a lot better now. I'm aware of how I don't want things to go and I will be doing everything that I can to make sure that that doesn't happen, but I do think that we will get along. My father has a bad temper. It seems to be something vaguely genetic in that I have it a bit too, not as bad as he has it, uhm but it's something that I know that happens to him and it's something I watch out for, so I try not to let it get to me. And I will have to be extra careful about that. If people snap at me, I will snap back. So I'm gonna just have to watch that, but at the back of my mind will always be: "What are you doing?" I've learnt that if absolutely necessary, worst-case scenario I'll just walk away from something and come back. So, if I get absolute worst-case scenario when I'm really frustrated, I will walk rather than snap. Uhm so I've gotta be very careful about that I don't want them not to like me.

Between two cultures

Obviously, we come from different places in India, we didn't have an arranged marriage or anything. So, we come from, we come from uh very different places. His family speak a different language, my family speak a different language, the sort of customs and traditions are different, and obviously, between the two of us we sort of communicate in English, because we don't, we don't really communicate in any other language. So, I would have been, will have some of these traditions passed on to him, about, you know, what's important and on my side, what my parents would do, that would be important to them and what his parents would do, that's important to them. Even if we weren't actually 100% involved in that kind of thing as we were growing up. So, I think it's quite important that he has some of these traditions, understands the language, be able to communicate back, that kind of thing. At the moment, we think, we would be able to understand these languages and communicate, uhm sort of effectively.
